Science or Dance?

Any science fanatics out there or lovers of dance? Ever thought that one day the worlds of dance and science would combine? Well, it has. Talk about using the right and left sides of the brain.

According to sciencemag.com, “this experiment began back in October 2008 with a challenge to scientists to interpret their Ph.D. theses in dance form, capture the dances on video, and upload them onto YouTube.” Out of the participants were four winners, “hailing from Australia, Germany, Canada, and the United States.” Cool right?

Then roles exchanged, choreographers where challenged to review a research article from the scientists and translate the article into a dance. With the help of the scientist, the four choreographers were able to understand the raw scientific material and create a four-part dance called THIS IS SCIENCE.

The Windy City (Chicago, IL) put on quite the show last February. Take a look at Scientist A and see how this team of scientists and choreographers were able to perform Type 2 Diabetes.

Scientist:
Sue Lynn Lau, Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney, Australia

Synopsis in a nutshell: Pancreas cells and mutant mice were used to prove which genes get messed up in type 2 Diabetes. (Here is a handy overview that Lau sent to her choreographer.)
