What would you be without your heart? No, this is not a trick question. The answer is simple. Dead. Every pump and beat is flow of life to the organs within your body. People can ‘live’ brain dead, but heart dead is not an option. Taking care of one the most vital organs in the body, the heart, is imperative. Aside from chronic illnesses, which are illnesses that people are born with, we beat up our hearts in other ways. Those ways include, not eating healthy and not being physically active. Obesity is a huge toll on the heart. Obesity raises the risks and side effects of other illnesses and abusive measures, such as secondhand smoke. Tobacco smoke raises risk of metabolic syndrome in teens
Teens, particularly overweight teens, who are exposed to tobacco smoke are at increased risk of the metabolic syndrome, according to a study published in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association. The study is the first to discover a link between tobacco exposure and the metabolic syndrome in this age group. The metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that increase cardiovascular risk. The syndrome often develops in childhood and is associated with insulin resistance, a metabolic disorder in which the body can’t use insulin efficiently.
“Tobacco and obesity are the two leading causes of preventable death in the United States, so our findings may have profound implications for the future health of the public,” said lead author Michael Weitzman, M.D., executive director of the American Academy of Pediatrics Center for Child Health Research and professor and associate chair at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, both in
