It is said, “ that your health is your wealth.” That statement couldn’t be more true, especially in regards to the African American community. African Americans face numerous health problems: heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes among others. However, all of those dilemmas have one major health problem at its core: obesity.

What is obesity?

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says: “ Overweight and Obesity are both labels for ranges of weight that are greater than what is considered healthy for a given height.” Find out more at www.cdc.gov/obesity/defining.html.

For example, a woman who is 5’5 has an ideal weight of 113-138 pounds. If she were to exceed the maximum weight for her body, and weighed 145 pounds, she would be considered overweight or obese.  A chart on healthy body weights according to height can be found at:   www.rush.edu/rumc. Read more>>
