Hot Summer Flicks….What's to come for Fall and Winter?
Britteny Dunson, 21
With summer brings days without school, fun with friends, and most of all HEAT! However, when it comes to the summer movie scene, sometimes it could fall into the realm of “lukewarm”. Not this summer! 2009 was THE summer for the big screen. With a large array of movies from classic “chick flicks”, to huge action sequels, to funny and larger than life family movies; there was something for everyone this year. What could be better than that? Well, the fall movie line-up could be even better.
My personal favorite this summer comes in the form of a hilarious comedy starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Heather Graham. Names don’t sound familiar? Well, they may not be the most well known actors, but they’re the people you’ve seen many of times and never knew! And by the way, Bradley Cooper is a hottie! “The Hangover” was a crazy fun comedy that follows a group guys on the bachelor party in Vegas, that goes way beyond your common party; lets just say: don’t steal Mike Tyson’s Tiger. With four stars from me, the Hangover is a must see!
There were a great array of comedies, including but not limited to Year One, Bruno, and what I felt was a total failure; Dance Flick. Though mildly entertaining in a “stupid fun” kind of way, Dance Flick failed to keep my attention. However it was interesting to point out all the Wayne’s and familiar faces.
Another genre that really did well this summer were romantic comedies or what some may call “Chick Flicks”. The Proposal was my favorite. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock, this movie will have you on the floor laughing and you find yourself falling in love with the couple as they go through a number of obstacles to get to their goal.
Some other great “Chick Flicks” were: “Ghost of Girlfriends Past”, “The Ugly Truth”, and the ultimate tear jerker “My Sisters Keeper” which is a wonderful story based off of a novel by Jodi Picoult, bring the Kleenex!
Though comedies and “Chick Flicks” held their own this summer, Action outweighed them out by far.
With big thrillers such as “Transformers”, “Star Trek”, “X-Men Origins“, “Angels and Demons”, “Terminator Salvation” and “The Taking of Pelham 123”. Take your pick, they were all great, with Transformers heading up as my personal favorite.
Overall summer 2009 proved itself to be a great movie season, but can Fall 2009 top it? With a great line up with the premier of the first African American Disney Princess in the “The Princess and the Frog”, epic adventure “2012“, and my personal favorite “New Moon”; the second step of the 4 part Twilight Saga.
The Fall season though not as packed as the summer, will defiantly prove to be quite interesting; I hope it doesn’t disappoint.
